“Burqa ban” comes officially into force in Portugal

Law 58/2026 takes effect today, prohibiting face coverings in public spaces and public service facilities with fines ranging from €150 to €3,000. Exemptions apply for health, professional, weather, artistic, diplomatic, and security reasons, while forcing another person to cover their face carries penalties of up to two years in prison.
