Azores ban pigeon hunting and bird fairs due to Newcastle disease
The Regional Government has banned the hunting of rock doves and all bird fairs and gatherings across all islands, effective Friday, August 14, for an indefinite period. These measures follow the detection of the Newcastle disease virus in wild birds; officials have also banned bird imports from affected areas and advised the public to report abnormal bird mortality and practice hygiene precautions.
Why it mattersIf you live in the Azores, you must stop hunting rock doves and avoid bird fairs or contact with wild birds, as the disease is highly contagious among poultry and poses a low but real health risk to humans.
