Algarve leads Portugal in ‘fake accident’ scams as losses soar

The GNR reports a 15.4% increase in 'fake accident' scams, with 30 cases and over €72,500 lost in the first half of 2026. Fraudsters target motorists, especially those over 60, by staging minor 'collisions' and either pressuring victims to pay cash or using portable terminals to steal bank cards and PINs.
