1.2 million families will have to change electricity and natural gas contracts in 2027
Over 1.2 million households currently on regulated electricity and natural gas tariffs are scheduled to transition to the liberalized market by December 31, 2027. While previous deadlines have been extended, the government has not yet committed to a further delay, noting only that a decision will be made in due course. Regulations require customers to be notified at least six months before the switch, meaning a final decision on whether to proceed with this deadline is expected by June 2027.
Why it mattersIf you are one of the 1.2 million households currently on a regulated energy tariff, you may be required to select a private energy provider before the end of 2027 unless the government announces another extension by mid-2027.
