Prime Minister warns he will be intransigent regarding EU budget cuts and rejects a "begging contest"

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, stated that Portugal will push to protect cohesion policy, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and funds for the outermost regions (Azores and Madeira) in the upcoming 2028-2034 EU budget. He argued against "begging" and stressed that Portugal's proportional contribution to the EU budget is higher than that of "frugal" member states.
