Banco de Portugal does not recommend this common card payment practice
The central bank advises that customers should always keep their bank card in their own possession during in-person payments. Merchants are instructed to position payment terminals so that customers can insert their own cards and enter PINs privately, rather than handing the card to staff.
Why it mattersIf you are asked to hand over your bank card to a shop or restaurant employee, you are advised by the central bank to retain it and insert it into the terminal yourself to protect your PIN and card security.
